Take Time to Reflect on Your Daily Routine

Author: Bette Daoust, Ph.D.

There are a number of things you can do to increase business using the power of ten. If you are able or want to be efficient with this fast paced way of doing business, you will also need to take ten for yourself at some point during the day. To be at a better efficiency rate, close your office door or find a quiet location to relax for ten minutes. If you can, take a pillow with you, turn off the lights, lie on the floor and close your eyes. Let others in your office know that you are taking ten for yourself. Make sure you set your watch so that you do not end up losing track of time. For myself, as I have a home office, I lie down on my bed and put on soothing music. I set the timer on my watch and turn off all the phones and shut the speakers on my computer. I find that after my quiet time work is much easier. I usually choose 2 pm for my quiet time as I am back from my lunch meetings and am getting ready to finish off some of my contract work.

You may choose a different time of day but afternoons work well for me. If you cannot find a quiet place to close your eyes at work, go for a ten minute walk outside. Outside may not always be the best weather but it will clear your mind. The best work you do will be when you are fresh and you cannot be fresh unless you take a breather during the day. I have a tendency to work at my desk during lunch and really need that break later on. You will find a real difference in your productivity if you add this routine to your daily schedule.

Be kind to yourself even if you are on a deadline for a project. The fresher you are the better your work will be. Just make sure that you do take the time to look after you.
