In 1814 We Fought the British in New Orleans

Author: Lance Winslow

Hurricane Katrina is hardly the first force to turn the City of New Orleans into a war zone. If you will recall in 1814 we met the British in New Orleans for a fight. We had sent in our army down the Mississippi River to New Orleans and the British had come up from the coast to challenge us. It started at noon as the British came into Chalmette town, 10-miles south of New Orleans on August 30, 1918. How coincidental indeed as Hurricane Katrina landed on August 29, 2005; one hundred and ninety-one years later. The weakened levee system broke the next day.

Although many have called this the forgotten war of 1812 which included the battle of New Orleans; the American people have certainly not forgotten who we are as we pick ourselves up with the will and determination which is deep in the sole of all of us. This battle changed American History forever and earned us the right to be independent. Hurricane Katrina also came in from the south and gave its best shot at New Orleans, it did not succeed the Levee System held, but was weakened. Likewise the British failed but had weakened us. We sent them running, they ran thru the baffles, they ran thru the bushes, they ran thru the swamps, where even rabbits could not go. We chased them back to the Gulf of Mexico.

Like Katrina a category five storm the British forces included 8,000 infantry of Royal Fusiliers, Highlanders, Dragoons, sailors and a Wet Indian regiment. Our Army was out numbered for that category of storm, with only about 4,000 people made up of a rag tag group of frontiersmen, pirates, Indians, Free Blacks and Townspeople of New Orleans. The British looters were turned running and as the storm retreated we had earned our right to our land, we quickly took back our land from the advancing storm troopers.

The British plan of conquest was to demolish principle towns and commercial cities and lay waste to infrastructure. The British failed then against American Perseverance, just like Category Five Hurricane Katrina has failed to break us now. We are too strong of a people to be defeated by a nation, group of criminal International Terrorists or any feeble attempt by Mother Nature to take out our ports, freeways, railways or any of our large cities? Nice try, but Mother Nature you should have read history before screwing with America. We are strong and United and we have not forgotten what we are made of, where we have come from or who we are. We will never allow anything to come between all we are and all we have built. Next time some thinks they are going to attack us, it is going to take something much larger than a little Category Five Hurricane with 165 mph winds the size of the Gulf of Mexico and a direct hit to make us hick up.
