Bird Flu hysteria - can they become reality

Author: Andrew Taylor

Nature has its own little secrets and is in the habit of springing surprises now and then .Every time we think we are in control, it throws up a challenge for us, keeping us busy in finding solutions. Colds, flu and other infections are spread by viruses and are at times impossible to prevent even though utmost care is taken. And imagine if the virus is spread by winged creatures!
Avian Flu or Bird Flu as it is known is caused by the avian influenza virus whose hosts are wild birds. It doesnt take long for the virus to spread among the domesticated fowl and human beings are bound to come in contact with the virus eventually If ignored it can be dangerous as it is feared that it has the ability to mutate and change. Cases of bird flu have been reported from a few countries like China Hong Kong and Thailand. But the disease is not as dangerous as the hype created over it .There is a risk of an epidemic only if we have a casual attitude.
Are we not aware that the carriers of rabies are dogs and that rat spread plague? Numerous vaccines have helped in preventing the spread of contagious diseases; in the same way medications have been discovered for controlling and treating bird flu. One has heard of Amantadine, Rimantadine but the most effective one so far has been Tamiflu. Tests have shown that Tamiflu can contain the H5N1 VIRUS in humans. It prevents the virus from leaving the infected cell it has entered form attacking the next cell, thus controlling the spread of infection in the whole body.
Havent you heard, a stitch in time saves nine.Bird flu symptoms are just like those of any other flu- cough, cold, sore throat, lethargy and eye infections. Since we know the virus is around, it is always better to play safe and start the intake of Tamiflu. You should also avoid poultry products. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the culling of infected poultry. The administration should ensure that the concerned department pays heed to the safety of the personnel involved in the exercise.
Like any other medication that is prescribed, precautions should be taken while using Tamiflu. It is not recommended for pregnant and nursing women. You should not resort to self medication and must visit a doctor before starting the medication.
Its time we work to prevent bird flu. Many times epidemics can be prevented by keeping personal hygiene and making sure our surroundings are clean. People need to be educated and advised about the dangers of ignoring health warnings. Remember bird flu is not invincible; the human race has survived worst calamities!
