Selecting a Los Angeles Dentist

Author: Christopher Luck

When I get ready to move to a new city, like Los Angeles, what should I do to find a new dentist? Moving to a large metropolitan area is something that can be intimidating. I will have to find somewhere to live, figure out where I'm going to get my groceries, and even account for dental care. Los Angeles is one of the largest cities in the United States, which means there are thousands of Los Angeles dentists from which to choose. The key is to narrow the selection down by knowing what to look for in a Los Angeles dentist in terms of location, service, and overall comfort.

First of all, since Los Angeles is such a large and sprawling metropolitan area, you should look for a dentist that is reasonably close to either your home or your work. You don't want to be on the road for hours just to get to the dentist. So open up the phone book and see which Los Angeles dentists are in your general area. You can either use the internet or your yellow pages to get the pool narrowed down to those in your area.

Next, things start to get a little more difficult. There are a number of factors you may want to consider in making your Los Angeles dentist selection. Obviously you want to make sure you have a good dentist, but how do you know? First, if you have made friends or acquaintances in the area, ask around. Word of mouth is often a great way to find a good provider of any service. Then, start making phone calls to the Los Angeles dentists you are considering to see if they meet the criterion you are expecting.

There are a number of questions you can or may want to ask any potential Los Angeles dentist, and they should be willing to answer your questions. If they seem evasive, that may be a red flag and maybe that doctor is not the right Los Angeles dentist for you. Ask how long the dentist has been in practice, ask if he or she is a member of the American Dental Association (ADA), and inquire about how well they are going to be able to work with your dental insurance plan to make sure you get the treatments you need at the least amount of cost to you. Many Los Angeles dentists outsource certain procedures, so you may want to ask what is done in the office and which procedures, if any, are sent out to other facilities.

The other factor you may want to consider in the selection of your Los Angeles dentist is the facility in which he or she is located. Make a visit to see if you are comfortable there. Is the facility neat and clean in appearance? Does the staff seem to adhere to infection control procedures as you understand them? You may also want to note when they are and are not open so you will know if the Los Angeles dentist you are thinking about is going to be open when you need him or her to be open.

As if moving to somewhere like Los Angeles isn't difficult enough, establishing health and dental care for yourself can be a real chore. Take the time to ask around, research the area, and visit potential Los Angeles dentists to see which will work best for you. Don't take it lightly because remember that you will be letting whoever you select work in your mouth, and that is not something to neglect.
