Male Plastic Surgery - The New Beauty Boom

Author: Stacy Richford

When most people talk about plastic surgery they are usually discussing various issues from a female perspective. However today men undergoing plastic surgery for cosmetic reasons is becoming a much more common practice.

Most men having surgical procedures done are doing so for the same reasons as most women and that is to simply enhance their physical appearance. There are even a growing number of plastic surgeons who specialize primarily in male related cosmetic surgery.

The type of plastic surgery men are having performed are much the same as those that have already been common place to women over the years. Procedures to smooth away wrinkles and reduce the signs of aging, as well as body sculpting to create a more fit and healthy looking physique.

Men are becoming increasingly comfortable admitting that they care about their looks. However, women still account for the majority of plastic surgery done today. Men were responsible for 13 percent of all cosmetic surgery done in the previous year. That is a steady increase from the 11.7 percent reported in 2002 and the 9.1 percent in 1998.

A common reason many men site is the simple fact that they want to attract more women. Many older men also want to date and marry some one much younger then themselves. You have gentlemen in there late 40s wanting to have a relationships with a women half their age.

We live in a very youth dominated culture and are constantly being barraged with images of the young and vigorous. In many ways older men are feeling that they are in competition with the young. The need to look strong with abundant vitality is a major concern for men in the work force. Especially in this electronic age where many assume older people are out of touch when it comes to technology.

Liposuction takes the top spot for both genders, with other commonly requested surgeries for men such as the trimming of the abdominal section combined with the lessening of love handles. Hair transplants are another big area which comes as no surprise, however breast reductions, nose jobs and eyelid procedures are growing greatly in popularity.

There are not many limits to male enhancement other than the surgical costs associated with the different procedures. Men also have certain procedures that are gender specific and will certainly require a surgeon who is a specialist in these particular matters.

Cosmetic surgery in men involves very similar techniques as those that are used for women, but there are significant differences in some areas of the body that one must take into consideration. For example men in general have thicker skin and in the facial area contain greater hair growth then women.

The resulting effect of this is a greater blood supply in the facial region which creates a higher risk of potential bleeding. This increased blood flow does have a note worthy positive affect in that most men heal better and slightly quicker than women when undergoing certain procedures.

It is imperative that anyone considering plastic surgery find a highly skilled and qualified cosmetic surgeon. Finding a surgeon who specializes in procedures for males would be the ideal situation even if you are undergoing a surgical procedure common to both genders. It is important to note that all surgery cosmetic and otherwise are very serious and life-changing experiences.

Make sure you seriously think about any potential surgeries youre contemplating and are comfortable with the associated risks. Many surgeons have noticed men on the whole are less happy with the results of cosmetic surgery then are women even when everything looks well and has gone smoothly. The reason for this has a lot to do with the motivations behind the decision to get surgery to begin with.
