Is surgery a solution for Peyronies disease?

Author: Maciek

Peyronies disease is a disease that transforms the normal tissues in the penis into scar tissues. Most patients with Peyronies disease also notice a lump on the shaft of the penis, as well as a change in the appearance of the penis such as abnormal curvature or loss of length. The severity of the symptoms can vary from mild to severe, and they are often accompanied by pain in the damaged penile areas. Peyronies disease is a very serious illness because it affects not only the body of the patient, but also his mind. Many men that suffer from Peyronies disease lose their self-esteem and their confidence and they are no longer able to enjoy intimacy and sexual relations.

There are different treatments for Peyronies disease, from medications to surgery and to alternative solutions. Most drugs used in the treatment of Peyronies disease are not effective or they have not been sufficiently investigated to clearly determine their effectiveness. Besides medication, the only other traditional way to treat Peyronies disease is trough surgery.

Surgery is the ultimate resort for patients with Peyronies disease. However, surgery is not always effective and it can have very serious side effects. Not all patients that have this condition are eligible for surgery, because of this methods high costs and risks. A patient with Peyronies disease is eligible for surgery if the disease is very severe and it stops the patient from having a normal sexual life, if the condition is chronic and there are no chances for natural recovery, and if the condition is stable.

There are three surgical options for patients with Peyronies disease: the Nesbit procedure, tissue grafts and implant surgery. The Nesbit procedure is the safest of the three and it corrects the curvature of the penis by gathering the outer sides of the bend. The main disadvantage of the Nesbit procedure is the fact that it reduces the length and overall size of the penis. Tissue graft is a surgical method that replaces the scar tissue in the areas of the penis affected by Peyronies disease with healthy tissue from other parts of the body. Implant surgery means that a solid or inflatable plastic cylinder is implanted in the corpora cavernosum so that the patient can sustain a normal erection.

Surgery is not a cure for Peyronies disease. Instead, it is a way to restore some of the normal penile functions lost due to this condition. Surgery for Peyronies disease involves many risks. Even if the operation is successful, the elasticity of the penile connective tissue is lost forever. Surgery can also affect the length of the erect penis. In most cases, patients discover that their penis size is reduced after the surgical procedure. Surgical procedures used in the treatment of Peyronies disease can also affect the skins sensitivity in the penile area and they can cause, in rare cases, a permanent sensory loss. Any patient with Peyronies disease that is considering surgery should know that this treatment could cause impotence and loss of the erectile rigidity.
